Minister of Justice announces Yukon’s Judicial Advisory Committee appointments

Today, The Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada announced appointments to Yukon’s Judicial Advisory Committee (JAC).

“Our Government has committed to creating a more open and transparent appointments,” said The Honourable Larry Bagnell, Member of Parliament for Yukon. “The Judicial Advisory Committee is made up of Yukoners and reflects the diversity of our communities and will have input into Yukon’s next federally appointed judge”

The JAC will be responsible to provide non-binding, merit-based recommendations to the Minister of Justice on federal judicial appointments for the territory. Key changes to the assessment process include:

  • committees that fully reflect the diversity of Canadian society;
  • revised committee mandates to increase the independence of their work;
  • an open selection process for the three public representatives on each committee – a measure which aims to ensure that all Canadians are properly represented in the appointment process; and
  • once appointed, committee members immediately receive diversity and unconscious bias training

“This is an important first step in the creation of the new federally appointed judge for the territory that was announced in budget 2017,” said Mr. Bagnell. “I am happy with the group of individuals that the Minister selected and congratulate them on their appointments.”

Yukon’s Judicial Advisory Committee is made up of:

  • Mr. Justice Ronald S. Veale
  • Geneviève Chabot
  • David Christie
  • Norah Mooney
  • George Filipovic
  • Jessica Lott Thompson
