“The Government of Canada yesterday released Canada’s new defence policy, “Strong, Secure, Engaged”, a monumental document that will guide our National Defence for the next two decades.
This document outlines a number of important initiatives for the North – updating the North Warning System, defending Canadian Arctic Sovereignty and engaging more Northern youth in the Cadet and Junior Ranger programs.
I am especially delighted to update Yukoners on the design contract for the Whitehorse Cadet Camp that was awarded to local firm Kobayashi + Zedda Architects. The amount of the contract is worth $65,125.00. The design is now progressing well and is expected to be completed by the end June with a forecasted building completion for Fall 2018.
Our Government will also enhance the Canadian Armed Forces’ ability to operate in the Arctic and adapt to a changed security environment by expanding the training and effectiveness of the Canadian Rangers to improve their functional capabilities.
We will also work in collaboration with the United States on the development of new technologies to improve Arctic surveillance. As well as control and conduct joint exercises with Arctic allies and strengthen the situ¬ational awareness and information sharing in the Arctic, including with NATO.”
